About Us
Matiwane Combined School, a beacon of hope in the Orange Farm community, was founded in 1992 by the visionary and humble Stephen Sangweni. He had a deep sense of compassion for the families living in the area who were struggling to provide their children with a quality education due to financial constraints. Sangweni’s unwavering dedication and selflessness led him to establish this institution, which has since impacted the lives of countless learners and families in the community.
Although the man did not have the opportunity to complete his own education due to a lack of resources, his lifelong aspiration was to provide all children with access to quality education. With the assistance of dedicated community members who generously volunteered their time to teach, Makazi Matiwane Combined School was established, initially in repurposed horse stables and chicken coops. Despite facing significant financial constraints, the school persevered and eventually relocated to Chicken Farm. The absence of funding did not impede the man’s determination to build the necessary structures for the school to operate effectively. His dedication and selflessness demonstrate the profound impact one person can make in the lives of others.
Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance
This individual refused to give up hope despite limited resources, and worked tirelessly to improve the education of children in his community. He reached out to potential sponsors and donors for donations of school furniture and necessary resources. His hard work paid off and the school gradually expanded, eventually moving to a new location and erecting container buildings which are still in use today.

Matiwane Combined School registered officially with the help of the Minister of Education, Mary Metclafe and her Deputy, Mr Mohapi. They obtained the correct curriculum and new equipment. Many teachers received training and degrees, and the school has become successful despite challenges.
We honor Mr Sangweni’s vision and contributions in building the youth’s future and influencing change. RIP.
